What’s new at Workshop 17 in Cape Town? A deep dive into their latest spaces & services

by Richard van Staden

As the demand for agile and innovative work environments continues to surge, Workshop17 is leading the charge in redefining how professionals connect and collaborate across Cape Town. Known for its unique co-working and flexible spaces, the organisation is unveiling a slew of exciting developments designed to cater to a diverse range of entrepreneurs, creatives, and corporate teams.

Here’s what’s happening in the bustling world of Workshop17.

The Newlands Cricket Ground – “Snakepit” Expansion

In a bold move that reimagines corporate culture, Workshop17 has reimagined the “Snakepit” at the historic Newlands Cricket Ground. The creative expansion of the existing building boasts panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows and breathtaking views of Table Mountain. This W17 venue is more than just an office space. With over 60 dedicated offices accommodating teams from two to 10 members, it’s poised to become the new hub for growing organisations. Additionally, the space includes five state-of-the-art meeting rooms, two consultation booths, and appealing communal areas perfect for collaboration.

This prime location is part of a mixed-use precinct featuring a cricket museum, an old brewery, and a selection of cafés alongside convenient transport links and ample parking. It exemplifies the perfect blend of work and leisure.

Century City – a vision for 2025

As part of its ambitious growth strategy, Workshop17 is set to launch a brand-new location in Century City by September 2025. Designed to harmoniously integrate “business, leisure, and lifestyle,” this innovative workspace will include flexible offices, hot-desking options, meeting rooms, and wellness-centred communal areas. This hub aims to cater to professionals seeking a workspace that is not only close to home but also directly connected to the vibrant life of central Cape Town.

Watershed Waterfront – boosting tech & innovation

At the heart of the V&A Waterfront, the flagship Watershed workspace is thriving with 154 hot-desks, private offices, meeting rooms, and 24/7 access. This location is designed to foster a tech cluster, hosting coding academies like WeThinkCode, as well as innovators and education platforms such as mLab and iXperience. Being part of the dynamic Waterfront ecosystem, it encourages cross-sector collaboration, nurturing local artisans and start-ups alike.

Tailored solutions & corporate partnerships

Workshop17 is witnessing an increasing number of corporates seeking tailored solutions – from “office-for-a-day” setups to “White Box Plus” fully serviced enterprise spaces. A notable highlight includes Yoco’s bespoke “20 Kloof” workspace, built to reflect their identity during their expansion in Cape Town. Furthermore, the introduction of home office support, equipped with ergonomic furniture, secure internet, and hybrid office technology under the W17 World platform, is set to meet the evolving needs of today’s workforce.

Enriching arts, culture & events programming

The W17 Gallery at Newlands is not just a workspace – it’s a cultural hub. Hosting exhibits like “Paper 2024” by the Turbine Art Fair, it promotes local and emerging artists through insightful talks and workshops. Additionally, frequent Heavy Chef entrepreneur events at the Watershed bring together book launches, networking sessions, and panels aimed at start-ups and side-hustlers, creating an enriching environment for creativity and networking.
