RocketHour hosts AI CodeQuest for aspiring young coders

by Media Xpose

As technology continues to reshape the educational landscape, RocketHour, a pioneering local tech academy, is stepping up its game by hosting an innovative AI CodeQuest during the upcoming July holidays. This initiative aims to redefine learning in South Africa, making it accessible and engaging for young learners, particularly those in grades 5-7.

The AI CodeQuest is a complimentary two-week intensive learning experience designed for 100 children. Participants will delve into the realms of AI-assisted coding and embark on creating their very own website. This unique programme reflects RocketHour’s commitment to fostering a new generation of tech-savvy problem solvers.

To participate, parents and their children are invited to fill out an application form on the RocketHour website at rockethour.co.za/codequest. As part of the application, children must submit a two-minute video introducing themselves and sharing their interests in technology. The deadline for applications is 18 June, with successful candidates announced shortly thereafter on 20 June.

“We are looking for kids who have a real passion for technology. The aim of the AI CodeQuest is to find students who are hungry to learn and put them in an online class with motivated peers and inspiring teachers,” said John Naiker, CEO of RocketHour.

Importantly, prior coding experience is not necessary. What matters most is a child’s curiosity and access to the internet. The AI CodeQuest is structured as a three-step mission designed to guide novice learners through a transformative coding journey, where they will become young creators ready to explore the world of artificial intelligence.

Learn: A hands-on introduction to AI and coding, facilitated by a human tutor, culminating in a series of structured challenges conducted in groups of up to seven students.

Build: Participants will then independently design and develop a web project that reflects their passions, utilising the skills and AI tools acquired during the Learn phase.

Shine: Finally, students will showcase their projects and videos to expert judges during a national online showcase, celebrating their innovations and efforts.

Judging will span four days, with winners announced on 24 July. Recognised figures, including Africa Melane, a renowned radio presenter, and Dr Michael Malahe, a Senior Applied Scientist at Amazon Web Services, will form part of the judging panel. Prizes will total R80,000 and include gaming laptops, VR headsets, and discounts on RocketHour’s programmes.

“In the age of AI, kids must learn to identify real-world problems rather than merely solve problems given by an education system. Understanding the world around them is essential,” Naiker remarked.

“The AI CodeQuest is more than just a competition; it’s a launchpad for young minds to explore the universe of AI and web development.”
