Aimed at empowering its graduates to reach their full potential and prepare them for the world of work, the Old Mutual Education Trust (OMET) offers a comprehensive and life-changing mentorship programme.
“Our mentorship programme is designed to support final-year OMET students over a 10-month period as they transition into life after graduation,” explains Leonie Sampson, Head of OMET.
“The programme provides guidance and career coaching, as well as personal development support.”
Being supported by mentors, who are either OMET alumni or Old Mutual colleagues, helps students in a variety of ways.
It expands their understanding of their chosen career paths and broadens their social networks.
To date, the programme has linked more than 127 final-year students with mentors. This year, 18 Old Mutual employees and 22 OMET alumni volunteered to assist OMET’s final-year students. Their commitment to supporting South Africa’s young talent to realise their full potential has been phenomenal. We are eternally grateful and appreciative of their support and the value they bring to the programme.
What is OMET?
The Old Mutual Education Trust (OMET) is a scholarship programme open to members, employees and dependants of union members of OMET’s ten participating unions.
The scholarship provides partial funding (currently R70,000 per year), equips students with laptops when they join as well as access to tutoring and psycho-social support services.
Over the last three years, OMET has had an average throughput[i] rate of 85%. This form of measuring entails tracking students that started in the same year and completed their studies. This impressive outcome is made possible by the dedication and hard work of OMET’s scholarship holders and the various support services provided.
