NSFAS urges landlords to collaborate on accommodation payments for students

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has issued a crucial reminder to landlords concerning the upcoming accommodation payment, set to be processed on 17 April 2025.

This announcement aims to reinforce the importance of compliance with submission deadlines, ensuring that students maintain stable housing as they pursue their studies.

Landlords are reminded that all accommodation claims must be submitted by the cut-off time of 12:00 PM on 9 April 2025. In preparation for this payment cycle, NSFAS is calling on all solution partners to compile a detailed list of students who have applied for NSFAS-accredited accommodation.

This list is essential for the approval process by the respective institutions, which will confirm each student’s eligibility for accommodation or transport.

To streamline this process, NSFAS assures landlords that for students not included on the global list provided by solution partners, payments will still be processed, relying on the registration templates submitted by the institutions. This provision aims to prevent undue financial issues for students who might otherwise face unexpected evictions or housing uncertainty.

NSFAS urges all participating institutions—universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges—to submit their confirmations by the established deadline. Institutions have also been encouraged to identify and report any students in NSFAS-accredited accommodation who do not appear on the list. NSFAS is committed to working collaboratively with solution partners to rectify any discrepancies that may arise.

As part of its ongoing efforts to foster a supportive environment for students, NSFAS has further urged landlords not to evict students during this critical period. The collaboration of landlords is paramount to ensuring students in vulnerable situations maintain stable living conditions. “We want to emphasise the significance of cooperation among all parties involved to protect the well-being of students who are striving towards their educational goals,” stated a spokesperson from NSFAS.

In recognition of the collective efforts made by landlords, colleges, universities, and student unions, NSFAS has expressed gratitude for their ongoing support and dedication. These partnerships play a pivotal role in creating safe and nurturing learning environments, crucial for student success.

Moreover, NSFAS remains resolute in its commitment to engaging with accommodation providers to identify and implement long-term solutions addressing the myriad challenges currently facing the private student accommodation sector. By working together, NSFAS and landlords can forge pathways that enhance the accessibility and quality of student housing, ensuring students can focus on their academic pursuits without the stress of unstable living situations.
