Not sure what to study after matric? Here’s how to choose your path with confidence

by Juhi

Finishing matric is a huge milestone, but what comes next can feel overwhelming. With so many study options, career paths, and opinions from everyone around you, it’s easy to feel stuck or unsure.

If you’re not 100% certain what to study after school, you’re not alone and that’s okay. The good news? There are smart, practical ways to figure it out without the pressure.

1. Start with self-reflection

Before looking at courses, look inward. Ask yourself:

  • What subjects did I enjoy most at school?
  • Do I prefer working with people, data, nature, ideas, or tools?
  • What am I naturally good at?
  • What kind of lifestyle or impact do I want in the future?

These clues help you understand your strengths, interests, and values – key ingredients in choosing the right path.

2. Explore career options

You don’t have to know the exact job title you want, but you can research career fields that match your interests. Use platforms like:

  • GoStudy, CareerJunction, or the National Career Advice Portal
  • Talk to professionals or older students in careers that interest you
  • Look at what jobs are in demand (e.g. tech, healthcare, green energy, digital marketing, education, etc.)

3. Think beyond traditional degrees

A university degree isn’t the only route to success. You can also explore:

  • TVET colleges (practical training in trades and services)
  • Online short courses
  • Learnerships and apprenticeships
  • Gap year programmes that include volunteering or gaining work experience

Success looks different for everyone and your path should fit your goals, not someone else’s idea of success.

4. Use free tools and resources

Take free career quizzes, attend open days, and reach out to education advisors. Many colleges and institutions offer:

  • career counselling sessions;
  • virtual campus tours; and
  • application support.

These tools help you make informed decisions without the guesswork.

5. Don’t be afraid to pivot

Your first choice doesn’t have to be your final one. Many people change their careers or study fields later and that’s normal. What matters is that you start somewhere that excites you and builds skills for your future.

In closing

Choosing what to study after matric is about progress, not perfection. Give yourself permission to explore, ask questions, and take it one step at a time. Your path is yours to create and with the right mindset and support, you can walk it with confidence.
