The Western Cape Education Department says it is ready for the start of the 2026 academic year, with Term 1 officially underway.
In a statement issued on the first day of school, the department confirmed systems are in place to ensure teaching and learning begin without disruption. The return to classrooms marks a key moment for hundreds of thousands of learners across the province.
Focus on parent and caregiver support
The WCED emphasised the role of parents and caregivers in preparing learners for success.
“By ensuring their children are well prepared for the school year, as well as every school day, parents are giving their children the strongest foundation for becoming independent and thriving adults,” the department said.
Parents were encouraged to read all school communication carefully, including information on uniforms, stationery and daily requirements.
Learning materials delivered ahead of time
The department reported that essential learning materials were ordered and delivered well in advance.
Schools placed top-up textbook orders between 12 and 23 May 2025. All deliveries were completed by October at a total cost of R58.7 million. Stationery valued at R25.3 million for non-section 21 schools was delivered by November, with a further R31.6 million in supplies delivered by December.
The WCED said it remains ready to respond to any additional needs arising from late applications or unexpected enrolment changes.
Late applications continue to strain planning
Late applications remain a challenge for the system. As of 7 January 2026, the WCED had placed 180 960 learners, accounting for about 96% of applications received for Grades R, 1 and 8. Placement is still in progress for 7 540 learners in these grades.
Since 1 November 2025, the department has received 10 666 late applications. This includes 758 applications submitted in the first week of January alone.
“Late applications disrupt planning for learner placement, resource allocation and staffing,” the WCED said, noting that placement discussions resume once schools reopen.
Parents who have not yet applied for the 2026 school year were urged to do so immediately at their local education district office.
