Transitioning from school to university is exciting, but spaces are limited, competition is tough, and costs can be daunting. According to Magdel Pretorius, Deputy Director: Student Recruitment at Stellenbosch University (SU), early preparation is essential.
Applications open on 1 April and close at the end of July each year. Students are encouraged to apply well in advance of the deadline and consider multiple programme choices — at SU, up to three are permitted. Strong academics, leadership, and community involvement all strengthen an application.
Plan for Alternatives
Not everyone gets their first choice, but SU highlights many alternative routes. For example, students not accepted into Medicine could consider related fields such as Psychology, Health Sciences, or Bioinformatics. Starting with a diploma at a university of technology or TVET college and transferring later is another option. Short courses, internships, and volunteering also add valuable experience.
Study with Employability in Mind
Emerging industries like data science, renewable energy, creative fields, and sustainable agriculture are expanding, alongside traditional disciplines like engineering, medicine, and law.
SU continuously adapts its programmes to meet employer demand, offering interdisciplinary degrees that reflect South Africa’s scarce-skills list, including ICT, STEM education, health sciences, and engineering.
Tackle the Financial Load
University costs — tuition, accommodation, and daily living — can be heavy. SU offers a wide range of need- and merit-based bursaries, faculty-specific funding, and NSFAS support. Students should apply early and explore external funding through the DHET bursary database and other sponsors.
Developing financial literacy is equally important. Budgeting, responsible spending, and manageable part-time work can reduce stress without compromising academic performance.
Bottom Line
With preparation, flexibility, and resilience, students can turn applications into opportunities. Stellenbosch University offers guidance, funding support, and diverse study paths — helping students secure not just a spot at SU, but a stronger future.
