In a transformative move for African innovation, Google has donated $1 million (around R18 million) to the University of Pretoria (UP), significantly advancing the institution’s ambitions in artificial intelligence (AI) research and development.

The funds will support the African Institute of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AfriDSAI), a forward-thinking research centre focused on AI for Africa, by Africa.

A Collaborative Hub for Innovation

AfriDSAI acts as a meeting ground for researchers, technologists, and communities, working together to develop data-driven solutions for real-world challenges across the continent. It is led by Professor Vukosi Marivate, the ABSA Chair of Data Science and a prominent voice in South Africa’s AI research landscape.

“This gift significantly enhances AfriDSAI’s ability to conduct high-impact, socially responsive research and nurture a new generation of African data scientists and AI leaders,” said Prof Marivate.

Changing the Narrative of Global AI Output

Africa currently contributes less than 1% to global AI research. AfriDSAI’s mission is to shift this imbalance by building a more inclusive and representative AI research ecosystem, rooted in local values and lived experience.

“It strengthens our mission to build sustainable AI research communities across Africa and ensure that AI technologies developed here are shaped by local knowledge and values,” Prof Marivate added.

University of Pretoria Champions Research with Impact

University of Pretoria Vice-Chancellor Professor Francis Petersen emphasised that the donation aligns closely with UP’s strategy to deliver innovation with tangible impact.

“The University of Pretoria is committed to being a thought leader in knowledge generation that is relevant, inclusive, and solutions-oriented,” said Prof Petersen. “AfriDSAI is a flagship example of how we aim to drive innovation that makes a real difference — not just locally, but globally.”

A Step Towards Global AI Leadership

With this donation, UP and AfriDSAI are well-positioned to help Africa move from being a passive consumer of global AI developments to an active contributor.

“This generous support from Google is an important step in reinforcing Africa’s role in the global AI ecosystem. It’s about creating knowledge that matters and preparing our continent to lead in the digital future,” added Prof Petersen.
