The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has officially announced that online applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners for the 2026 academic year will open on Thursday, 24 July 2025 at 08:00, closing at midnight on Friday, 29 August 2025.

Limited-Time Window for Online Applications

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane confirmed the dates during a media briefing, stressing the importance of applying within the allocated time frame.

“You can’t apply now, and you won’t be allowed access after 29 August either,” he emphasised, as reported by The Citizen.

All applications must be completed online via the official GDE admissions website using an internet-enabled device such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer.

New Login Credentials Required

Parents and guardians must register new login credentials, even if they have previously used the system. All updates will be sent via SMS to the registered mobile number, so it’s crucial to ensure contact details are correct and current.

Five Easy Steps to Apply

The GDE online application system includes the following five steps:

  1. Register and create a profile
  2. Enter parent/guardian and learner details
  3. Select up to five preferred schools
  4. Upload supporting documents
  5. Track application status

All supporting documents must be uploaded within seven days of application submission to avoid delays or disqualification.

Required Documentation Checklist

Parents and guardians should have the following documents ready:

  • Parent/guardian ID or valid passport
  • Learner’s birth certificate or passport
  • Latest school report (for Grade 8 applicants)
  • Clinic/immunisation card (for Grade 1 applicants)
  • For foreign nationals: valid refugee, asylum seeker, permanent residence, work or study permits

Mismatched or incomplete information across documents may result in rejected applications.

Avoid Last-Minute Rush, Apply Early

The Department has strongly advised parents not to wait until the deadline, encouraging early submissions to avoid system bottlenecks and minimise stress.
